Lab Primer: Percent water in a hydrate
In this lab you'll determine the percent composition of water inside of the ionic compound Copper(II) sulfate pentahydrate. We'll take advnatgae of ionic compounds and their very high melting points by heating a crucible containing the compound allowing us to liberate the trapped water molecules from the Copper(II) sulfate. From there, all we have to do is compare the grams of water lost to the mass of our original sample and presto! We have a percent composition.
Check out this video here as I give a brief overview of the lab, technique, and materials required. If you have any questions let's discuss them tomorrow. See you in lab! Percent Water in a Hydrate Lab |
