Chapters Nine and Ten: Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis
We've learned that life is an open system that needs a constant input of free energy in order to organize and fight against the inevitable disorder of the universe. The only problem with that is that our ultimate source of energy cannot be directly processed. There must be an intermediate between our sun and chemoheterotrophs that produces our direct sources of energy. These organism fix inorganic carbon in the atmosphere into organic molecules like glucose.
