We all know that offspring resemble their parents more than they do unrelated individuals. That's no surprise. If you take a close look, you can pick out some similarities you have between yourself and your parents or siblings. This transmission of biological information form parents to offspring is known as heredity. However, offspring aren't exact copies of their parents in sexually reproducing organisms. In this theme of biology we'll examine where variation in offspring comes from, some strategies for how to increase variation, and why having differences between generations is essential to long term survival as a species.
